HRH Prince Charles Congratulates Macphie on CSR Commitment
Macphie of Glenbervie, the UK’s leading independent food ingredients manufacturer, was the only company to pick up two awards at the fifth annual Scottish Business in the Community (SBC) Company of the Year Awards in Edinburgh.
The business, which employs over 300 people across its two sites at Glenbervie and Tannochside and last year netted £3.4m in profit, scooped SME of the Year and its second CommunityMark award for its work in the community.
Presented with the SME award at SBC’s Jubilee Anniversary dinner, which was hosted by SBC president, HRH Prince Charles, Sylvia Halkerston, Human Resources Director at Macphie, said: “Macphie operates in a very competitive market place, where it is increasingly important that we place our customers’ needs at the heart of our business. We have developed a reputation for innovation, quality and service in the bakery and food sectors developing strong relationships with our customers in approximately 40 countries at this time. Macphie has amongst the lowest staff turnover figures in the food & drink industry worldwide and has achieved significant and sustained growth in a difficult marketplace.”
Other Company of the Year winners were:
ScottishPower – Large Company of the Year
Foyer Enterprise – Social Entreprise of the Year
Des Ryan, Edinburgh Cyrenians – Marks & Spencer Sieff Award
On achieving CommunityMark status for the second year running, Sylvia added: “These awards recognise Macphie’s exceptional commitment to the local and wider community. Macphie undertakes initiatives which would not be contemplated by larger and better resourced companies. We have a tradition of giving back to the community and we do so in many ways - reaching out to families, education at all levels and community groups. We can only do this with the commitment, dedication and integrity of our own people. Our employees are proud of their company and their environment, and this shines through in the work that we do.”
In celebration of SBC’s 25th anniversary, two Jubilee Awards were handed out to companies who have delivered a long-term positive impact on communities. ScottishPower collected the first for its ScottishPower Learning initiative with Cunninghame Housing Association in Ayrshire picking up the second.
Finally, Standard Life chief executive, Sandy Crombie, was unveiled as the new Prince’s Ambassador, replacing Sir Robert Smith, chairman of the Weir Group, in the role.
The UK Awards for Excellence are produced in Scotland by SBC with support from Communities Scotland and Scottish Enterprise. All applications are evaluated in London by a team of trained assessors from around the UK, representing the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.
