Easter Around the World: Traditions and flavours to inspire your offerings

Easter, taking place this year on Sunday, April 20th, is a Christian festival celebrated across the globe. While the reason behind the celebration remains the same, each country brings their own unique traditions, from special festivals to Easter foods.

One of the most universal symbols of Easter is the egg – whether it’s rolled down hills, painted in vibrant colours, or enjoyed in decadent chocolate form.  As we have highlighted in our recent YOLO campaign, we believe that food is more than just fuel – it’s an experience, a memory, and a way to savour the moment.  These traditions offer endless culinary inspiration. Let’s explore how different cultures celebrate Easter and how you can bring some of these egg-cellent traditions to your offerings.

Updating your offerings for the seasons does not have to be difficult or costly, sometimes just adding some seasonal decorations or shapes is all that’s needed.  Try out our recipe for Easter cupcakes made using Macphie Mississippi Muffin & Cake Mix and Macphie Vanilla Frosting or our Easter biscuits made using Macphie Shortbread Mix and 5th Avenue® Icings.

On Easter Monday, the town of Bessières in southwest France come together for a celebration unlike any other – a feast centred around a giant omelette. In a tradition that has captivated locals and visitors for years. A number of volunteers gather to cook an enormous omelette using around 10,000 eggs in a giant frying pan, serving around 2,000 people.

This unique festival has been a beloved tradition for over five decades, with 2023 marking its 50th anniversary. Its impact has stretched beyond Bessières, inspiring similar omelette festivals in at least six other countries. What started as a local Easter celebration has grown into a global phenomenon, proving that sometimes, the simplest traditions can bring people together in the most extraordinary ways.

For many families, Easter morning begins with decorating eggs – only to send them rolling down a hill in a friendly competition to see whose egg travels the furthest without breaking.

But this tradition is more than just a fun game for children; it carries symbolic meaning. Some believe that rolling eggs down a hill represents the rolling away of the stone from Jesus’ tomb, making it a meaningful part of Easter celebrations for many.
