Macphie insight | Goodbye sugar high!

Goodbye sugar high!

It’s no secret that excessive sugar intake is linked to a range of health concerns and, as the government reveals their plans to tackle childhood obesity, sugar remains a hot media topic.

‘Childhood obesity – a plan for action’ reveals that one third of children aged 2 to 15 are overweight or obese and obese adults are seven times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those at a healthy weight.

To help address the growing obesity and diabetes crisis, as well as reduce the risk of severe tooth decay, the government has challenged all sectors to reduce sugar levels by 20% by 2020, including a 5% reduction in year one.

At Macphie, we aim to be at the forefront of market change in order to provide innovative business solutions for our customers. We have been working closely with suppliers to source alternative ingredients which will keep our sweet treats sweet without impacting the taste and quality of our products.

We’ve also been working together with partners including Campden BRI and Queen Margaret University, to develop revived products with reduced sugar levels ahead of changing legislation.

As the market changes and the buzz on sugar shows no sign of dying down, it’s vital the industry continues to develop innovative indulgences without the sugar hit, and we’ll also continue to evolve our varied product portfolio to ensure we keep customers sweet!
