Macphie supports sustainable bakery award for second year - Macphie

Macphie is sponsoring the Baking Industry Awards sustainability category for a second year.

The award category was launched in 2021 and aims to highlight businesses and initiatives making the sector a more sustainable one. Green energy initiatives, waste reduction, recycling and sustainable sourcing are just some of the things last year’s finalists were praised for, with Muntons taking home the award for developing an energy-saving bio-energy plant at its Stowmarket mill.

The build required close liaison with planning authorities, environmental regulators, railways operators and plant design and construction teams from the UK. Muntons also had to maintain absolute food security to allow the site to remain operational.

The panel of judges – on which Macphie’s technical director Mark Duncan joined – said they were impressed by how Muntons galvanised its staff to work together to achieve their objectives and they commended the company for focusing on achievements and gains rather than merely the investment required.

The Baking Industry Awards – organised by British Baker – are now open for applications with a deadline of 9 May. Macphie’s sustainability manager Kirsty Allan will join the panel of judges for the sustainability category before the winners are revealed at a glittering ceremony in London on 20 October 2022.

Kirsty recently spoke on British Baker’s first free webinar on how to make your craft bakery more sustainable. Kirsty shared actionable and practical advice alongside representatives from food waste app Too Good to Go, Pettigrew Bakeries and Lovingly Artisan. View the full webinar here.
